Is it time for your Health & Safety Audit?

Safety audits are an essential part of a successful business. An audit is a systematic appraisal of on-site procedures and processes to make sure health and safety standards are being upheld and ensure the continued welfare, health and safety of employees.

The health and safety needs of a small or large business can change over time and it is important that audits are carried out on a regular basis to make sure that the systems you have in place are working efficiently and are fit for purpose. It helps to identify areas for improvement and potential weaknesses but also demonstrates that you are committed to the health and welfare of employees, customers and all other stakeholders. It is important to view an audit positively as it’s your chance to highlight the successes of your organisation and an opportunity to praise your staff for a job well done!

Ask yourself the following sample questions and if your answers are “no” or “don’t know” then maybe it’s time for your next Health and Safety Audit.

  • Is a spill kit available if this is required?
  • Are procedures in place to ensure adequate stocks or timely delivery of PPE?
  • Do employees know how to obtain replacement PPE?
  • Is the PPE issued based on the requirements of Risk Assessments?
  • Do employees know how to report faulty or damaged PPE?
  • Are first aid boxes provided in appropriate locations?
  • Are procedures in place to ensure the first aid boxes are kept stocked?
  • Is fire fighting equipment in place and maintained?
